The Design Challenge

From an industrial design and product strategy perspective, the core challenge was accelerating mainstream solar adoption by overcoming the high costs, physical bulk, and installation friction of traditional solar storage. Standard energy storage systems were often heavy, difficult to handle, and inflexible for varying home or business layouts. The design team needed to create a scalable system that integrated seamlessly into the Enphase Energy Management System brand ecosystem, while addressing real-world architectural constraints—such as fitting standard wall stud spacing and supporting both vertical and horizontal configurations—without requiring multi-person installation teams.

The Design Solution -

To solve this, Enphase and Studio Backs created the Enphase AC Battery™, a modular, "plug-and-play" storage unit designed for maximum usability and effortless deployment. Weighing just 40 pounds and featuring a 16-inch width tailored to standard garage wall studs, the compact unit utilizes a custom mounting bracket with an interlocking rail feature, enabling a single person to easily align and hang multiple modules in a row. Powered by safe lithium-iron-phosphate chemistry and integrated 5th-generation bidirectional microinverters, the sleek hardware delivers a cohesive, premium brand experience that easily scales as user energy needs expand, significantly lowering both price barriers and installation complexity.
