The Design Challenge
The design challenge was to create a fully sustainable packaging solution for The North Face Baselayer clothing line while navigating the unique material limitations and structural demands of eco-friendly substrates.
The Design Solution
To solve this, Studio Backs evaluated various green materials before selecting molded paper pulp for its structural strength, recyclability, and manufacturing capabilities. The final solution is a single-piece clamshell construction complete with integrated hinge points and locking features, allowing the package to be either hung or displayed freestanding on retail shelves. Additionally, a double-pressed fabrication process was utilized to achieve a superior surface finish and clean, recessed recycling icons.
