Digital Cell Biology at Light Speed

The Design Challenge -

The core challenge for the Lighthouse 1.0 instrument was successfully transitioning from a large, proof-of-concept floor-standing unit into a highly scaled-down benchtop platform for single-cell manipulation. To serve applications across biopharma, diagnostics, and life sciences, the system needed to grant researchers the unique ability to directly visualize individual cells in real time and maintain complete ownership over complex, rapidly iterating workflows. Additionally, the device had to be architected to aesthetically and functionally stand out within a highly competitive R&D landscape.

The Design Solution -

The design solution delivers a compact, agile benchtop system featuring a user-centric architecture that optimizes laboratory workflows and allows for highly flexible assay execution. The industrial design effectively resolves usability hurdles by leveraging integrated lighting and functional color-coding to intuitively highlight critical user-interaction zones. Beyond improving day-to-day functionality, this distinctive design language establishes a powerful visual brand identity, resulting in an iconic, memorable flagship product that defines the Berkeley Lights portfolio.
