The Design Challenge -

The objective was to design a cost-effective, space-saving automated instrument that addresses critical global MDRO threats by delivering rapid ID/AST results in 5 to 8 hours. The design required a highly responsive and flexible architecture capable of reducing hands-on clinical time, improving throughput, and managing a workflow tied to barcode-linked testing components.

Design Period: c. 1999–2000

The Design Solution -

The VITEK 2 Compact delivers an automated, space-saving system featuring iconic cartridge doors and an easy, intuitive loading interface. It maximizes laboratory safety and efficiency through a closed, disposable card system that requires minimal handling and reagent preparation. The scalable platform offers models accommodating 15, 30, or 60 cards, leveraging a Smart Carrier Station that tracks barcode-linked cassettes to completely automate all subsequent incubation and reading steps.
