The next-generation Merlin™ Patient Care System (PCS), co-developed with IDEO Product Development, is a portable, specialized programmer used by physicians to communicate with St. Jude Medical (now Abbott) implantable pacemakers. It allows doctors to retrieve diagnostic data, conduct cardiac tests, adjust pacing therapies, and alter settings (like pacing rates and modes).

The Design Challenge -

Clinicians lacked a mobile, adaptable platform that could seamlessly fit into diverse clinical spaces or allow for easy, flexible handling when interacting with patients during vital cardiac procedures.
