The Design Challenge -

Prior to the introduction of the Medtronic Model 9790, medical professionals faced severe portability challenges during procedures. The standard equipment setup was cumbersome, requiring practitioners to carry a suitcase packed with three separate, individual devices: a standalone programmer, an independent printer, and a computer with its own display.

Design Period: c. 1993–1995

The Design Solution -

The Medtronic Model 9790 solved this by consolidating all necessary components into a single, compact, portable unit that established a new industry standard. Its design integrated a side printer with a status window and tear-away slot, hidden rear power cord storage, and an integral programmer head with a coiled telemetry wand stored under the front lid which acted as palm rest for stylus input. To maximize ergonomics and protect the screen during transport, it introduced an industry-first two-bar hinge with a two-button release and a reversible display supporting 180-degree foldability. Designed for easy mobility with rear rubber feet for vertical standing and upper corner metal pins for a shoulder strap, this design earned top honors at the Red Dot, iF Design, and Appliance Manufacturer’s "Excellence in Design" awards in 1997.
